The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners elected Charles "Chuck" Chestnut chair and Ken Cornell vice chair at a reorganizational meeting on Nov. 12, Jess Irby, the county clerk, announced at the start of the session.
Chestnut was nominated from the floor and the motion carried by voice vote. Ken Cornell was nominated and elected vice chair after a separate motion and second. Following the votes, the board posed for an official photograph and recognized the outgoing chair for the past year of service.
Commissioners used the reorganizational gathering to present a community quilt from Archer and to recognize county employees and volunteer efforts. The board also approved the regular and consent agendas without modification and heard routine departmental announcements.
The meeting moved on to scheduled presentations and public comment, with residents urging the board to take action on local concerns including a nearby landfill and proposed trail alignments. The board voted on several staff recommendations later in the meeting, described in separate articles.
The board said it will continue its business at upcoming regular meetings and will schedule follow-ups on items referred to staff.
