Commission approves resolution to create unified Cheatham County library system

The Cheatham County Legislative Body approved a resolution on March 16 authorizing the formation of a single county library system, consolidating the county's two independent libraries under one system.

The resolution, introduced by the Calendar, Rules and Nominating committee and moved by David Anderson with a second by Diana Lovell, passed by voice vote (1 absent). The action follows consultations among the Board of Trustees, library directors and the Red River Regional Library; meeting documents indicate trustees and directors believe a unified system will better serve patrons.

A July 15, 2025 board document included with the packet outlined next steps, including required notifications to state and local governing bodies and an implementation target (no later than Oct. 1, 2025) if previously approved by trustees. The commission's March 16 action authorizes the county role in that transition and directs trustees to proceed with notifications and implementation tasks.

Why it matters: consolidating library governance can alter funding flows, staffing, and service coordination across the county. The resolution will require administrative steps with the state library/regional system and local stakeholders.
