Commission clears land division to create lot for future MCW student housing

The commission approved a certified survey map to create a new lot at 8701 West Watertown Plank Road intended to accommodate future student housing for the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW).
City staff said the proposed Lot 2 meets required standards for the Special Purpose Medical Center District and stressed that the commission’s review covered the survey map only, not the future student housing project. "The student housing development in the future is permitted by right at this location and will undergo a separate building and site plan approval," the staff member said, and noted the design review board has already granted design approval.
Chris Carr of the Sigma Group introduced himself for the record and said project partners from MCW and a developer partner were on the call. "This is the setup for future development, that we're excited to look move forward with," Carr said.
The chair commented that MCW can build on the site as of right and acknowledged neighborhood unease about student parking and concentrations in adjoining neighborhoods, adding that the college is responding to a need for affordable student housing.
A motion to approve the certified survey map was moved and seconded; the commission voted "aye" and the chair declared the motion passed unanimously. The item will go to the Common Council on April 28 for final consideration.
