Washington College intern and county GIS specialist show interactive road-condition map and sidewalk inventory

Summary
The county's planning department presented an interactive GIS web map—built by Washington College intern Alex Logue and GIS specialist Tyler Arnold—that color-codes road segments by maintenance recency and documents about 10.2 miles of sidewalks mapped so far; the county has about 287 miles of county roads.
Tyler Arnold, the county's planning-department GIS specialist, and Alex Logue, a Washington College GIS intern, demonstrated an interactive web map for Public Works that color-codes county road segments by last maintenance date and includes a pie-chart summary of the distribution.
——"This is the app that we or he made, for public works," Tyler said, explaining the map shows roads colored green (serviced in the last five years), yellow (six to 10 years) and red (11 or more years). The project joined Public Works' Excel inventory to the county's road layer so staff can search specific roads and change background imagery between aerial and road-focused views.
Tyler said the team has started a sidewalk layer for incorporated towns, completed Betterton and was mapping Chestertown; he and Alex said they have mapped about 10.2 miles of sidewalks so far. The chair noted the county's total road mileage is about 287 miles for context.
Commissioners thanked the interns and offered a letter of appreciation; Tyler credited Alex with building the application and said the map is already in use by Public Works for quick condition checks.
The presentation was informational; no formal vote was required. The chair encouraged the interns to stay engaged with county work and offered assistance with a letter of appreciation.
