MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The Montevallo City Council used part of its March 23 work session and regular meeting to receive routine public-safety, community-outreach and economic-development updates and to read two proclamations.
Police and public safety: Police Chief Burr reported monthly activity totals, noting 60 reports for March and 257 total reports for the period covered in Appendix 1. Council Member Kenneth Dukes said Fire Chief Davis was unable to attend and no written fire report was submitted.
Community outreach and prevention: Sarah Hogan Shaw, program director for Impact Montevallo, summarized recent activities including Prevention Day at the State Capitol, the Backyard BookFest, attendance at the Alabama SAYS Conference on drug trends, a Going Green for Mental Health campaign with the theme #STOPTHESTIGMA, and an upcoming presentation at the Alabama School of Alcohol and Other Drug Studies (ASADS) conference.
Public works and parks: Kirk Hamby, Director of Public Works, reported operational items such as Free Dump Day at the Recycling Center, replenished playground chips, park signage work, curb painting in no-parking zones, and parking-lot striping. Hamby said he would contact ALDOT about a reported pothole on Middle Street near CVS.
Economic development and events: Courtney Bennett, Executive Director of Montevallo Main Street, outlined ongoing facade grants (50/50 up to $5,000), the city’s recent Princeton Elm planting as part of the Liberty Tree Project, and plans for Friday Nights at the Cove and an educational Business Basics session. Adele Nelson, Executive Director of the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce, announced upcoming chamber events and communications.
