Harris County pauses reprecincting pending U.S. Supreme Court ruling

The Harris County Commissioners Court on Nov. 13 approved an order pausing the county’s reprecincting process until the United States Supreme Court issues a ruling on proposed 2026 congressional maps, the presiding officer said after the motion passed unanimously.

The action came after a brief public hearing called to adopt notices to establish Harris County Elections precinct boundaries; no members of the public signed up to speak. A staff member told the court the order incorporates the recent congressional redistricting ruling and applies when the court adopts a 25‑map scenario but would not apply if the court adopts a 21‑map plan.

“So it's just a motion to approve the order pausing the reprecincting subject to a ruling by the United States Supreme Court on the 2026 congressional maps,” the staff member said when reading the motion. The presiding officer then asked for a second, and the motion was seconded. After the vote the presiding officer said, “It passes unanimously.”

The court did not register any public testimony on the precinct‑boundary notices and took no additional policy direction beyond approving the order. The clerk’s readout recorded the motion as approved by unanimous voice vote.

After the action on the precinct order, the court proceeded to consider the rest of the agenda and approved items 1–29 before adjourning at 9:19 a.m.
