Director: Bay Beach opens this weekend; parks department still seeking about 25 lifeguards

The parks director reported Bay Beach Amusement Park will open to the public this weekend with weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, operating weekends only until Memorial Day and then opening full time for the remainder of the summer season.
"We're only open weekends until Memorial Day," the director said, adding that ride operators are nearly fully staffed but the city is still recruiting lifeguards. The director estimated the department needs about 25 lifeguards and said interviews are ongoing.
The director also said the new train ride will open to the public this weekend; an official dedication or ribbon-cutting will be scheduled later in early summer once a date is coordinated with the donor. The director said the donor has reviewed plans and is satisfied, and staff will announce the formal dedication when a date is set.
Committee members asked about a ribbon cutting and staffing plans; the director said the department structured the capital plan to request construction funding in future bond years after design work is complete and that staffing shortfalls for lifeguards are common and often filled close to the pool opening date.
The parks committee adjourned following the report. The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for May 13.
