Principal Tamara Griffith presented a Spotlight on West Junior High, highlighting the Fine Arts department’s recent student recognitions and curriculum initiatives intended to improve student outcomes.
Griffith said enrollment is about 335 students, that two-thirds of staff are new this year, and that the school offers courses beyond core classes — including Algebra I, Physical Science, Computer Science, Business Education, Library and STEM — as well as extracurriculars such as mentoring programs, Junior Beta and an upcoming Robotics Club. Several students and an art teacher, Ms. Haddad, were recognized for regional and local achievements.
The school is implementing Google Classroom districtwide to support accessibility of assignments and instructional material and is using weekly PLC meetings and data-driven instruction to move from a Level 1 status toward good standing with the state. Dr. McPherson and Mr. Keel praised Griffith’s leadership in guiding a largely new staff through these changes.
The committee thanked the principal and students for the presentation.
