DeSoto County School Board recognizes seniors and confirms two principal appointments

The DeSoto County School Board used part of its April 16 meeting to recognize high-achieving seniors from across the district and to confirm two principal appointments.
Superintendent (speaker 3) opened the recognitions by noting the district routinely recognizes students who scored 30 or higher on the ACT: "Throughout the school year, we have been recognizing students who have made a 30 or higher on their ACT," he said. The meeting featured a series of short presentations from principals and school representatives naming valedictorians, salutatorians and star students at multiple high schools across the district.
Examples listed during the meeting include Lake Comer High School’s Caitlin Payne, Center Hill valedictorian Kayla Hope Figueroa Kelly (who introduced herself at the podium), Hernando High School valedictorian Aditi Cicelya, Horn Lake valedictorian Caitlin Boyle and Lewisburg High School valedictorian Sofia Zaccanini. Several students chose teachers as their "star teacher" and on multiple occasions principals noted a student scored a 35 on the ACT would automatically qualify as a star student under program rules.
The board also approved two personnel actions announced in the meeting. The superintendent said one veteran principal, April Rucker, had accepted the position of principal at Southaven Middle School and the board confirmed that appointment. Superintendent 3 introduced Dr. LaDonna Thomas as the newly approved principal of Southaven Intermediate School; Dr. Thomas (speaker 11) addressed the board and said she was "grateful for this opportunity to serve as principal of Southaven Intermediate School" and spoke about her 15-year career in education.
The recognitions were ceremonial; the business portion of the meeting then proceeded with routine votes and contract approvals.
The board adjourned the open session business and moved to a closed session later in the meeting to address personnel and property contract matters.
