Summit County presenters urge more recycling, local drop-off as landfill nears capacity

Representatives from Summit County told the Henefer Town Council on April 7 that the county landfill is reaching capacity and urged towns to expand recycling and composting and to help educate residents about recyclable materials.
Janna Young and Tim Loveday presented Summit County’s Solid Waste Action Plan and summarized survey results showing residents want more convenient recycling options. The presenters said about 85% of material that arrives at the county recycling facility is actually recycled. Kent Trussell asked whether mulch production had been tried; Tim Loveday said attempts had been unsuccessful. Presenters said the county plans to establish a local drop-off recycling site this summer and emphasized education to reduce contamination of recycling streams.
The presenters described strategies being considered countywide, including expanded composting and better public education on what items are recyclable. The council did not take formal action on the plan at the meeting; presenters and residents discussed practical steps and local interest in hosting a drop-off site.
