Commission backs letter supporting Raton senior-housing grant request

The Colfax County Commission voted to provide a letter of support for a federal funding request from the Ron Community Development Collaborative to develop senior-targeted housing in the City of Raton and Colfax County.
Paul Jenkins, co-founder and president of the Ron Community Development Collaborative, told the commission the project envisions two six-unit single-level buildings (12 one-bedroom units total) targeted to occupants aged 55 or older. Jenkins said roughly 80–85% of local seniors fall below 120% of area median income (AMI) and that the organization had identified three potential parcels (each about an acre) that are under negotiation. The requested funding amount is $3 million, the cap for a congressionally directed spending grant.
Commissioners voiced support for addressing a shortage of affordable rental and ownership opportunities for seniors and approved the letter of support by roll call (Kern, Trillo, Tatum voting yes). Staff noted the region already uses state and North Central Economic Development District programs for mobile-home replacement and other senior housing supports but that demand outstrips available funds.
Next steps: the collaborative will proceed with the grant application and staff will provide a letter of support for the grant submission.
