Melbourne Beach to auction surplus signs; proceeds to fund manatee-protection efforts

Public Works Director Tom Davis asked the commission to authorize auctioning surplus municipal signs that are still legible but not needed for official traffic control. Davis said the town had about 75 signs in surplus and suggested using proceeds to help fund manatee-protection efforts and stormwater outlet improvements.
The commission discussed logistics, publicity and volunteer staffing. Mayor Allison Dennington and several commissioners volunteered to staff the sale for short shifts to assist operations. Commissioners asked staff to post a list of items, describe how proceeds would be used and include a mockup of a challenge coin that would accompany each purchased sign as an incentive. The motion to proceed with an auction and direct proceeds toward manatee protections passed 5-0.
The town will schedule and publicize the auction event, include item details on the website and coordinate with the police and public-works departments for day-of operations.
