Sto-Rox SD to revamp Virtual Vikings, seeks on-site teacher support for remote learners

Nancy Hines reported shifts in charter enrollment and introduced district plans to strengthen Sto-Rox SD's virtual offering. "Hybrid charter enrollment remained at 114. However, brick and mortar charter enrollment dropped by 11 students," Hines said.
Sonya Coleman described steps the district will take to improve outcomes for students choosing remote instruction: Sto-Rox SD will partner with Seneca Valley's virtual program so on-site teachers can log in to support remote learners, and the district will implement additional metrics to vet students before permitting enrollment in Virtual Vikings.
"When parents are choosing to go virtual, that they're having the same success they would have if they showed up here on our campus every day," Coleman said, describing the intent to provide on-demand teacher support and to tighten enrollment criteria for the cyber program.
Hines and Coleman framed the changes as efforts both to retain students and to ensure remote placements are appropriate and supported. The district scheduled family meetings (one on the following day and another on Tuesday) to solicit feedback from charter and cyber families about why they choose alternatives and what might persuade them to return.
Next steps: Family engagement sessions will be held (in-person and virtual) and the district will report back on whether the partnership and intake changes yield higher retention and improved student success metrics.
