Commission approves Onalaska High School addition and parking reduction; school board member recuses

The Onalaska Plan Commission on March 24 approved a planned unit development amendment to allow a building addition at Onalaska High School, permitting a reduction in required parking to accommodate a new weight room and training space.
Planning staff said the Onalaska School District requested a reduction in parking to allow the addition and described site plans and parking reconfiguration included in the packet. Staff stated the request would reduce parking by 31 stalls, from 443 to 412, to make room for the addition; staff also reviewed earlier PUD actions and said prior approvals and the current layout continue to meet daily parking needs and that 11 conditions of approval are recommended.
Superintendent Ben Barton spoke in favor and introduced civil engineer Jeff Mohouse of Paragon Associates, who said the work aims to use high school space more efficiently while upgrading facilities. No public opposition was recorded during three calls for comment. A commissioner who is also a school board member recused from the item, and Commissioner Jared Halter chaired that portion of the meeting.
Commissioner Jim Bash moved to approve the amendment with the 11 conditions; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Bill Lethan and passed unanimously.
The commission’s approval is conditioned on the 11 items listed in the staff packet; any future school expansions will require further PUD amendments and deviation requests.
