Caddo Parish Commission holds tributes for Bloody Sunday, fallen service members and local community honorees

A special resolution commemorating Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama, was presented and read into the record; Commissioner Kenny Epperson said the event and the passage of the Voting Rights Act were reminders of the need to protect access to the ballot. "We shouldn't ever forget how important it is the right to vote," Epperson said during his remarks.
The commission also read a resolution mourning U.S. service members who died in early stages of the Iran conflict, read dozens of names and presented framed copies to local American Legion posts and the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center. An invocation by U.S. Air Force veteran Calvin Presley preceded the veterans remembrance.
Commissioner Storm McGhee White presented a resolution of remembrance for Demetric Lavell Alexander Metcalfe (known as "Pooley"). Metcalfe’s mother, Lusita Alexander, thanked the commission and said, "My son life mattered. It did," noting the family still seeks answers about the circumstances of his death.
The commission honored Green Whitaker Sr. on his 100th birthday with a detailed resolution recounting his life of community service; his daughter Anita Whitaker and other commissioners shared memories. The Eury Drive Middle School football team received formal recognition for an undefeated season and city championship; the coach and principal stressed academic standards for student-athletes and commissioners praised players’ community service.
These recognitions were part of an englobed set of special resolutions the commission adopted by motion earlier in the meeting; the body voted to englobe and adopt the special resolutions with recorded support from a majority of commissioners.
