Board approves Apex Center design work; bond-project updates show construction progress

The Murray City School District board on April 2 approved staff recommendations to accept Murray High campus master-plan deliverables from VCBO and to direct VCBO to begin design work for the Apex Center under the preferred option (1B). The board also authorized staff to proceed with contract execution and to solicit early contractor involvement through a public RFP process.
Director Tagert told the board the recommendation includes design considerations to accommodate a future fieldhouse — "footings and window placement should reflect that idea that that that that that would that could be a possibility in the future," and he requested a motion and vote on the package. The board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by voice vote.
District staff told the public the Apex Center project is grant-funded through the Utah State Board of Education and the state legislature and is not being paid from district operational funds. The district described the center as focused on health-care careers and said the award covers design work and initial project steps.
The meeting also included a bond-project update for Murray High and Riverview. Staff reported Murray High’s exterior structure and roofing are largely complete and interior finishes are progressing; Riverview is on the critical path for steel erection and masons have staged scaffolding to follow steel work. To address construction parking and laydown needs during high-site activity, the district has entered an interlocal agreement with Murray City Parks and Recreation to use a fenced area in a nearby park for temporary laydown and parking; that area is scheduled for underground retention work next week as construction proceeds.
Why it matters: the Apex Center is a state-funded capital project intended to expand career-focused facilities; early contractor involvement and careful design choices (including provisions for a future fieldhouse) are intended to reduce later change orders and to preserve options for the campus.
