Council introduces ordinance to ban heavy trucks on Loretta Street near SR‑76

The Oceanside City Council introduced an ordinance on March 25 to ban vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds from using Loretta Street south of State Route 76, responding to resident complaints about large trucks striking overhead wires and performing unsafe maneuvers on the residential street.
Taylor Carter, city traffic engineer, presented the staff recommendation to amend Article 14, section 12.3 of the Oceanside Traffic Code, noting that Loretta Street is a narrow residential roadway with parking on both sides and overhead utility wiring that has been struck by large vehicles. “Staff is recommending the amendment of article 14, section 12.3 of the Oceanside Traffic Code to prohibit vehicles in excess of 10,000 lbs on Loretta Street, just south of SR‑76,” Carter said.
Carter said the proposed prohibition includes an explicit exemption for trucks making direct deliveries to addresses on the street and that staff will coordinate signage and outreach with the city’s permitting process and Oceanside Police Department to support enforcement. When asked about enforcement experience in other jurisdictions, Carter said she would coordinate with the Oceanside Police Department, pursue permitting for signage and work with the neighborhood on timing of incidents.
Councilmember Figueroa moved to introduce the ordinance on first reading; the council voted 5–0 to introduce and title the ordinance.
