The Weed City Council introduced two code‑enforcement ordinances intended to address public‑safety and quality‑of‑life concerns.
Ordinance No. 481 (2025) would add a code section making it a misdemeanor for individuals to remain inside red‑tagged or condemned premises except when present to rectify the unsafe condition (for example, contractors performing repairs). Staff said the change responds to recent incidents in which structures posted as unsafe continued to be occupied; council members praised the draft as a clearer, more enforceable provision.
Ordinance No. 483 (2025) would add Chapter 8.10 to the city code to address unauthorized removal and abandonment of shopping carts. The proposed rule would require each business that supplies shopping carts to submit a written plan for collecting lost or abandoned carts, respond to notifications and retrieve carts within a 72‑hour window; the city would not be required to collect carts. Staff noted enforcement is simplified when carts carry required signage; the ordinance as introduced includes a compliance timetable that gives businesses time after adoption to file plans and add signage.
Both ordinances were introduced by title only for first reading and carried by voice vote. Separately, the council tabled a request to close Main Street for an April 20, 2025 festival because required business sign‑off documentation had not been submitted.
