Planning commission recommends updated comprehensive plan after multi-month public process

The Amelia County Planning Commission voted to recommend adoption of an updated comprehensive plan to the Board of Supervisors following a multi-month drafting and outreach process.
Lauren Pugh of the Commonwealth Regional Council, who assisted the county on the update, told commissioners the Virginia code requires periodic review and explained the county's process: three community meetings, a widely circulated survey that produced nearly 500 responses, and focused attention on chapters including future land use, natural resources and transportation. Pugh said the plan is intended as a living 20-year guide and can be amended as conditions change.
Commissioners discussed the plan’s guidance for the US 360 corridor—encouraging commercial and light industrial uses close to the highway and residential development set back and buffered behind those uses—and cautioned against permitting scattered residential pockets that would undermine the county’s stated goal of concentrating growth. One commissioner stressed the plan is a guide but represents substantial citizen input.
After discussion a motion to recommend the comprehensive plan to the Board of Supervisors passed by voice vote.
The Board will take up the plan for formal adoption at its public hearing; commissioners noted that the plan can be revisited and amended in future years.
