Council reviews FY27–32 CIP priorities for county offices, public safety, technology and transit study

Council members reviewed the preliminary FY27–32 Capital Improvements Program subcategories for General Government, Technology Services, Public Safety systems and Mass Transit.
The Government Operations committee recommended a six‑year funding level of $172.7 million for County Offices and Other Improvements, a 7.9% decrease from the prior CIP estimate, primarily due to project closeouts. Technology projects recommended included county building network wiring, Fibernet upgrades and Montgomery Connect broadband efforts to expand connectivity in affordable housing and commercial buildings.
Public safety briefings highlighted a phased replacement of aging public‑safety radios used by first responders, a standalone law‑enforcement records management system project, and a new self‑contained breathing apparatus replacement project for Fire & Rescue. The White Flint station No. 23 (five‑bay station) is planned to begin construction in FY27 with completion in FY29.
Transit committee discussion flagged bus rapid transit (BRT) on US‑29 and asked staff to study alternatives for the Four Corners segment (mixed traffic, single median lane, cut‑through traffic impacts) before finalizing the project description and funding assumptions.
Committees will reconvene on several items for amendments and further review in April and late April committee sessions.
