Palm Beach district previews major changes to choice and enrollment policies

The Palm Beach County School Board convened a May 6 workshop to review proposed changes intended to make it easier for families to apply to choice programs and to retain students amid districtwide enrollment declines.

Superintendent Burke and his leadership team said the revisions aim to streamline choice processes and expand access. "With the enrollment situation we're currently dealing with, it inspired us to go back and review our choice policies and our controlled open enrollment policies and look for opportunities where we can make it easier for families to navigate our system," Superintendent Burke said.

Dr. Geraldine Johnson, director of the Department of Choice and Career Options, outlined four principal changes. For Policy 5.015 (student reassignment), the district would expand eligible groups — for example, allowing siblings of IEP-placed students to be assigned together — extend supervision-hardship options into middle grades, and clarify and align involuntary-exit procedures with the student code of conduct. "The updates that we are proposing include expanding the criteria for student groups, such as adding the ability of siblings of IEP placed students to be assigned," Dr. Johnson said.
