Finance staff explained the amendment is intended to cover program costs for the next two academic years and to provide stability while participation and fee collections continue. “This is to take $500,000 out of the unassigned fund balance and putting it into after school program,” the finance presenter said during the meeting.
Board members pressed for clarity on how the money will be used and how long it will last. Finance staff said the district budgeted approximately $121,000 in expected use for the current year and that the $500,000 should be sufficient to carry the program for multiple years, depending on student participation and collection of the $5 daily fee. The staff member stated the figure was an estimate and that actual spending could be lower if families pay participation fees.
The board asked whether the existing parent‑pay model remains in effect; staff confirmed no change had been voted and parents would continue paying unless the board acted otherwise. After discussion, the board approved the amendment; the meeting record shows the item passed unanimously.
The restricted funds will be tracked in the budget as designated for the after‑school program; staff said they will report back on usage and projections as the program continues.
