Curator updates exhibitions, 250th celebration plans and a recovered time capsule

Nathan, the curator, said curation policies were approved at the January State Building Commission meeting and shared results from the Governor’s Capital Art Exhibition (383 entries, 62 selected, nine public purchases to date). He said proceeds from public purchases are earmarked to help the museum acquire pieces for its permanent collection.
Nathan outlined plans for the July 4 Semi-Quincentennial celebration on the Capitol grounds, including a full day of events coordinated with the City and County, a parade, a speaker series and an evening symphony and fireworks. He said the event will include student artwork and a time capsule project representing state government and communities; staff are collecting items and working with tribal representatives and arts organizations.
Committee members discussed a sealed time capsule recovered from construction that had not been replaced and asked whether to recommend opening or re-placing it; Nathan said the subcommittee would be an appropriate place to consider that question and could recommend next steps to the State Building Commission.
Next steps: curator staff will continue exhibit programming and will return with recommendations on a time-capsule disposition and any proposals to include artifacts in future exhibit spaces or the extension’s break room when construction allows.
