Senate committee backs resolution urging protection of ANC participation in SBA 8(a) program

The Senate Resources Committee unanimously moved House Joint Resolution 44 (companion to SJR 26) from committee, sending a bipartisan message supporting Alaska Native Corporations and tribal entities’ participation in the federal SBA 8(a) business development program and warning lawmakers against proposals that would weaken participation.

Representative Maxine Divert told the Senate Resources Committee on Wednesday that House Joint Resolution 44 reaffirms Alaska’s support for Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) and tribal entities participating in the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 8(a) business development program. “This program has been one of the most effective tools for creating economic opportunities in Alaska, particularly in rural Alaska and underserved communities,” Divert said.
