The Princeton Public School District board voted to place certain contract teachers on unrequested leave of absence during its regular meeting, approving a resolution administrators said was required by current staffing and enrollment realities.
Board member Melissa moved to approve the resolution, and Eric Minx seconded. After a brief explanation of the seniority process, the board voted by roll call; the chair declared the resolution passed.
A district staff member explained how the ULA process works and how affected employees would be treated: “So that's how that works. ... this kinda holds their spot, for up to 5 years,” the staff member said, describing the district practice of offering openings to the most senior qualified staff first and how employees can accept or decline subsequent offers.
Administrators framed the action as one component of larger budget adjustments tied to recent enrollment declines. During an extended information item earlier in the meeting, staff described a set of estimated adjustments — including para reductions and targeted hiring to meet growing special-education needs at older grade levels — that they said informed which positions became surplus.
Board members asked whether employees placed on ULA could take positions in other districts and later return; staff responded that employees who take other jobs can be considered for district openings when they arise, and that tenured staff are prioritized in recall offers. The board also heard that some affected employees hold tenure and would be the first to be offered rehire should positions reopen.
The resolution was presented as a personnel and budgetary measure rather than discipline; staff emphasized that the district must follow seniority rules and licensing constraints when reassigning or recalling staff. The board concluded the item with a roll-call vote and the chair announced the measure had passed.
The district will adopt the listing of individuals to ULA as part of the June budget process and staff said affected employees will receive follow-up information and offers according to seniority and licensure if positions reopen.
