Berkeley Heights officials on Wednesday presented the district'level results from the spring 2025 New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) and laid out next steps to address subject- and grade-level gaps.
Dr. Maher outlined district performance across English language arts, mathematics and science, noting "major growth" in grade six ELA (a 16.6-point increase in levels 4'5) and gains in grade five science and some middle-school math bands. He also flagged declines: grade four mathematics showed a double-digit drop and algebra I proficiency at the high school level lagged the state average.
Why it matters: Trustees and student representatives pushed administration for actionable follow-ups. Board members pressed for cohort analyses to follow the same students across years, clearer parent-facing explanations of test labels and numbers, and quicker feedback loops so teachers can act before year-end testing.
On math curriculum, administrators described the new Math 8 course introduced to provide grade-8 standards before algebra I and to reduce the repeat-and-gap problem among students who take algebra in different grades. "So the math 8 course also introduces a lot of the algebraic concepts in a much slower pace," Dr. Maher said, explaining that students who took algebra early historically missed embedded grade-8 standards.
Administrators also said the district is expanding targeted interventions and tools for teachers. They described an adaptive tutoring tool (referred to as "Alex" in their presentation) and a high-impact tutoring program piloted last year. Trustees asked for evidence of effectiveness and a plan to track how classroom interventions change next-year performance.
Next steps: The district said it will publish additional analysis (including subgroup and cohort breakdowns) and share concrete action items linking professional development, adaptive supports and targeted small-group instruction in the months ahead. Trustees urged clearer, earlier communication to parents about what test results mean and what supports the district will provide.
