Orland Park begins reconstruction of 143rd Street and John Humphrey Drive intersection

A Staff member for the Village of Orland Park announced that the village has begun reconstruction at the intersection of 143rd Street and John Humphrey Drive. “The Village of Orland Park has begun construction at the intersection of 143rd Street and John Humphrey Drive,” the staff member said, describing a project that will widen pavement and rebuild the roadway.

The staff member said the work includes pavement widening and reconstruction, drainage improvements, traffic signal modernization and interconnection, and lighting upgrades. The updated road will add dual left-turn lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic "to help reduce delay, provide a better level of service, and improve safety," the announcement said.

Officials noted an engineering constraint on the eastbound side: the existing lanes sit on a dry land bridge, a structure used to prevent road sinking in areas with soft soil. To address that and support the intersection, the village will install a new pile-supported embankment system. The announcement described the piles as 30-foot wooden poles that will support the roadway from below.

To avoid detours, the project will proceed in three stages so the intersection can remain open during construction. Work began on March 2, 2026, and the village said it anticipates completion in early 2027. Drivers were asked to follow posted road signs during construction; the village directs people to orlandpark.org/engineering for more information and updates.
