Parks staff said the existing pool heaters are original to the facility and are at or near typical lifespan, prompting a recommendation to replace them proactively. “They are at their lifespan for the most part for a typical pool heater,” the Director said, noting recent repair activity and the risk of a midseason failure that could force a pool shutdown. Purchasing solicited bids; two companies responded for the heater work and the low bidder was Carico Aquatic Resources. Staff told the committee the vendor expects installation prior to the pool season if council approves.
On the storage garage, staff sought an architect to produce site plans and bid documents so construction can be bid later. Two firms submitted proposals and Somerville, Inc. was the low proposer at $94,600. Staff said the city requested $100,000 in this year’s bonding to hire a consultant but does not yet have construction funds scheduled; the five-year capital improvement plan shows construction bond funding anticipated in 2028.
Funding for the heater replacement will come from two bond accounts with remaining balances; staff said no additional appropriation is required. The committee approved both motions by voice vote.
What happens next: the heater contract and the Somerville agreement will proceed to council consideration where final award and authorization will be confirmed; the storage garage will require a later construction appropriation.
