County administrator joins Feeding Tampa Bay volunteers on Meals on Wheels ride-along

Steve Howard, the county administrator, joined Feeding Tampa Bay staff and community volunteers on a ride-along to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound residents, organizers said. The event was framed as both a way to deliver hot meals and to check on the welfare of people who have limited contact with family or friends.

"My name is Jessica Vessalotes. I'm with Feeding Tampa Bay," said Jessica Vessalotes, one of the staff members on the ride-along, describing the nonprofit’s role in coordinating deliveries. Vessalotes said the recipients are often unable to get to stores easily and that "sometimes they're only communication for the day," underscoring the social as well as nutritional role of the service.

A participant identified herself as Patricia, and Steve Howard confirmed his role when he introduced himself as "the county administrator." Howard said a personal connection informed his participation: "Actually my mother ... she's also a Meals on Wheels customer," he said, noting the program's importance as a check-in beyond meal delivery.

Speakers described the experience as rewarding for volunteers. "You take a couple minutes to talk to them and stuff," Vessalotes said. "As much as rewarding for them, it's rewarding to me, too, because it lets me do stuff that I feel purpose," she added.

Organizers emphasized the practical benefit of delivering hot food to people living alone. "It's nice to get a hot meal when you're on your own," one participant said.

No formal decisions or policy actions were announced during the ride-along; the event was presented as community outreach and volunteer engagement to support homebound residents.
