Task force asks preservation partners to assess historic courthouse’s future use

One speaker cited Tennessee law related to county property jurisdiction and noted that any long-term disposition may require coordination with the sheriff’s office. "Preservation is not only the rehabilitation, maintenance, and preservation of historic buildings, but a vital downtown community," a preservation representative said, offering to have a local group examine adaptive-use options.
The task force passed a motion to ask Mr. Heler to engage preservation partners to study whether the historic courthouse could be adapted or leased long-term rather than sold, and to report back with an assessment. Members also asked that staff perform a title search on the historic courthouse to confirm ownership and any restrictions before advancing options.
Next steps: Mr. Heler and preservation partners will produce an initial assessment of potential adaptive uses and identify any financial needs to complete that work; county staff will pursue a title search and coordinate with the sheriff’s office where required.
