Community Services outlines ADA transition projects and phased accessibility investments

He identified specific priorities: about $80,000 to add power door openers, restroom upgrades and signage at the Benjamin Franklin Community Center; roughly $125,000–$150,000 in phased ramp and door work to make the Allen Road senior center accessible (including egress improvements for many patrons who use walkers and wheelchairs); and a phased plan to install an elevator at the Gallagher Mansion using an existing shaft, with an estimated $400,000 total cost and a proposed $250,000 start this year and $150,000 in FY28.
Bill said the ADA transition is a continuing obligation and the department intends to phase projects to keep improvements moving while conforming to budget constraints. Committee members acknowledged the importance of the work and noted items may be considered again in the next cycle if funding is adjusted.
