Montclair honors Mayor Pro Tem Tenise Johnson and Fire Chief David Pole at council meeting

Several legislative representatives presented certificates to Johnson, including staff from Congresswoman Norma Torres, Senator Susan Rubio and Assemblymember Michelle RodrEDguez. Colleagues and community groups praised Johnson's mentorship, committee leadership and volunteer work. Johnson thanked attendees and said she will remain active locally, noting with a smile she plans to take line-dancing and piano classes and "take lots and lots of naps." The council also celebrated Fire Chief David Pole's career. The city manager summarized Pole's progression from reserve firefighter in 1989 through promotions to engineer, captain, battalion chief and ultimately fire chief in 2023. Staff and council members noted Pole's service on Urban Search and Rescue, swift-water and hazardous-materials teams, and his role training firefighters. Legislative and county representatives offered certificates of appreciation.
City Manager Star said a replacement process is under way and named Ryan Derk as acting fire chief while the city evaluates departmental management and staffing needs. Star also noted the department is receiving new rolling stock from the state and expects delivery of a city-ordered engine and progress on funding for a tiller truck.
The council paused for applause and a brief recess during the recognitions. The presentations preceded the evening's public hearing and council business.
