Wayne County to mail corrected W‑2s after payroll FICA coding audit

John Wallace, the county chief financial officer, told the committee that payroll FICA coding errors were identified during the Oracle payroll transition and that an external audit of 2024 payroll is underway to determine and correct affected records.
Wallace said corrected W‑2s for the 2024 issues are being mailed to impacted employees this week. For earlier years, the county said a 2022 internal audit covered 2018–2022 and included payments and reimbursements; county staff need time to validate that prior audit to avoid duplicating adjustments. Staff said additional data-mining will be required to assess 2015–2017 and 2023 and to determine whether any employee penalties were incurred.
When asked about penalties to employees, Wallace said the county is working with counsel to understand impacts and will develop a plan once affected employees and the magnitude of errors are identified. The county asked for time to complete validation before returning with a full report and plan for remediation.
