Durham Council extends Golden Belt lease after residents question past city investments

At the March 16 meeting the Durham City Council unanimously authorized the city manager to execute a fourth amendment to the lease with LRC GB LLC for office space in the Golden Belt complex at 807 East Main Street and approved an optional additional five‑year extension.
During public comment Jackie Wagstaff and others asked whether Scientific Properties (linked in the public record to Dr. Rothschild) still owned the Golden Belt parcels and whether prior city-funded renovations had effectively subsidized private property. Wagstaff pressed whether the $2,284,440 figure in the staff report represented an annual amount or a five‑year total.
City staff responded that the $2,284,440 referenced in the staff report is the total amount over the five‑year extension (roughly $300,000–$400,000 per year) and that an optional extension beyond that period remains available. After public comment the council moved, seconded and voted to approve the five‑year amendment and the optional extension; votes were recorded as unanimous.
