Council approves Wawa’s request for three EV charging stalls with landscaping and color conditions

Plantation planning staff presented a site plan amendment for Wawa at 100 South Pine Island Road to install three EV charging stations serving six stalls and two equipment pads. Planner Dan Holmes described a landscape waiver needed to reduce the required buffer from 15 feet to approximately 6 feet 1 inch to accommodate equipment and a new transformer.
Staff recommended approval but expressed concern about the chargers’ bright corporate colors; applicant representative Austin Bouchard (Kinley Horn) said the charger brand currently comes only in the proposed color and that Wawa and its partner prefer consistent branding. Council members pressed for options to minimize visual impact; several suggested hiding equipment and switchgear with dense, tall plantings and encouraging the applicant to pursue lighter colors if available.
The council approved the site plan subject to conditions requiring the applicant to attempt to secure a less conspicuous color and to install landscaping sufficient to screen the equipment from Broward Boulevard and Pine Island Road. The sponsor said the transformer and switchboard would be new and shown on revised plans and that the landscaping would be designed to obscure the chargers to the height needed to reduce visibility from the main intersection.
