Resident urges Plantation to opt out of Axon AI data training, request public hearing

At the public‑request portion of the April 29 meeting, Plantation resident Tiffany Hudson said she supports police but is concerned about a recently signed contract with Axon Enterprise that she said allows the company to retain and use transformed camera data to train artificial intelligence systems. Hudson said residents were not consulted and asked council to opt out of Axon’s AI data‑training program if the city has not already, schedule a public hearing before cameras are installed, and commit to resident input on similar decisions going forward.
"Axon's own contract states they can permanently own the transformed data their cameras record," Hudson said, urging the council to increase transparency and protect residents’ behavioral data. She also cited ongoing litigation surrounding Axon and connections to suppliers under federal review as a reason to pause and examine the contract closely.
Council members and staff responded that the city conducts public meetings and that procurement and legal staff can brief the council and public on contract specifics and appeal/opt‑out mechanisms. Staff said follow‑up would be possible and that residents’ concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate departments for a response.
