Commission approves technical-assistance letters for Indian River Lagoon referendum groups

Brevard County commissioners unanimously approved a request on March 17 to provide a technical-assistance-request letter to The Trust for Public Land and The Nature Conservancy, enabling those nonprofits to offer pro-bono polling, outreach and technical support ahead of a proposed Save the Indian River Lagoon referendum.
Vince Lamb, who brought the item forward, said both organizations offered free assistance and noted prior use of similar assistance in earlier local referenda. "They've got lots of good experience," Lamb said, and described polling and outreach support that would help the county and advocates better understand public priorities.
Commissioners discussed the letter's form and clarified it does not commit county funds or endorse campaign activity. One commissioner asked whether the letter simply confirms the county is not opposed to receiving technical assistance; staff and the proponent said that was the intent: to inform nonprofits applying for grants and to let them know the county will accept technical assistance.
After discussion, the board voted to approve the requested letter. Officials said the letter will enable the nonprofits to proceed with outreach plans and to offer technical input; the board recorded the approval by voice vote.
