The East Grand Forks City Council approved two separate actions Jan. 20 to allow ground-mounted solar energy systems in the city.
Council approved rezoning Lot 1, Block 1 of the Scholarship Addition from R1 to PUB to permit construction of a ground-mounted solar energy system. Council member Karen Peterson moved the rezoning and Vice President Tim Ripel seconded; the motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
The council also approved a special-use permit requested by Independent School District 595 to install a ground-mounted solar energy system on Central Middle School property. Tammy Schumacher moved approval, and Karen Peterson seconded; the permit passed by unanimous roll call.
No members of the public spoke during open forum on these items, and council did not identify specific contractors, project timelines, or system capacities during the discussion. Staff confirmed the actions were intended to enable the respective solar projects to proceed through permitting and project planning.
