Board adopts Savvas math program; approves bilingual/multicultural program expansion

Dr. Oldham described a revised, more inclusive adoption process for math instructional materials that opened review opportunities to all teachers and used a rubric adapted from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Following teacher feedback and cost estimates, the board approved purchasing Savvas enVisionPLUS for K‑12. Staff said they will attempt to use current year cash balances to purchase materials earlier so teacher editions are available for summer planning rather than late summer delivery.
Separately, Mr. Chavez presented the bilingual/multicultural education program (BMEP) application. The district projects roughly 1,138 students in bilingual/multicultural programs next year; six schools operate dual‑language programs with Columbus Elementary moving toward a 50/50 Spanish/English model starting in kindergarten. Secondary programs will adjust the structure for newcomers by separating ELD (newcomer 1062/1063 sections) to provide more targeted support; students who exit EL status will transition to reduced Spanish instruction but maintain Spanish language arts where appropriate.
The board approved both the math adoption and the BMEP application. Staff will coordinate purchasing logistics and program implementation timelines with site principals.
