Commission sets timeline for selecting 2026–2028 poet laureate

Commission staff reported that nominations for the 2026–2028 poet laureate were collected, scanned and organized into digital packets for evaluators. Commissioners were told that evaluators will be given a spreadsheet to score each candidate and return their individual scores to staff, who will average the results to determine the top-scoring nominee.
"We get everyone's scores, add them up, average, and then from there that person is what's going to be presented either at the May 18th or the June 1st council meeting," staff said. The commission discussed timing and representation for the city council agenda; if the May 18 slot is used, staff will notify commissioners in advance and, if needed, the chair may represent the commission at council.
Commissioners were also told the evaluators would have roughly one to two weeks to review materials and submit scores and that staff would be available by phone for questions during the evaluation period.
Staff said they will distribute the nominee packets and scoring spreadsheets by email and collect returned spreadsheets to calculate the averages prior to the council meeting.
