Oceanside names skate spot for Shane Hidalgo and El Corazon site Sapool Park after community hearings

The Parks and Recreation director presented staff and commission recommendations to name the skate spot at John Landis Community Park for Shane Hidalgo, who family and community witnesses described as a mentor to youth and a leader in local skate programs. Multiple relatives and supporters recounted his community work and urged the council to honor his legacy; council approved the name Shane Hidalgo Skate Park 5‑0.
The council also approved naming Park Site One at El Corazon Sapool Park, a Luceno‑language option provided in coordination with tribal representatives and the Friends of El Corazon. Staff noted costs for signage are included in project budgets and said the parks department will work with the family and community on a plaque and celebration date.
The council asked that staff coordinate outreach and suggested including interpretive materials to explain names and their pronunciations for the broader public.
