Board approves extra kindergarten section at Kaiser after enrollment exceeds projections

The Kirkwood R-VII school board voted to approve hiring an additional kindergarten teacher at Kaiser Elementary after staff reported enrollment exceeded projected thresholds.
"At the publishing of this memorandum we actually were at 62 kindergarten students and ... we are at 62 and ... I believe it would be a wise move to open up another section of kindergarten at Kaiser and I hope that is what is approved here this evening," said Dr. Rich, the district presenter.
Dr. Rich told the board that projections had shown about 55 students earlier in the enrollment cycle and that enrollment projections can change. He said hiring another section now keeps class sizes near 20, noting the district opened a new class once projections and actuals indicated it was needed.
Board members praised the district’s updated enrollment-monitoring and hiring processes. "I echo what everyone said. This is great news," one board member said after the presentation. Another board member emphasized that getting ahead of enrollment changes allows better hiring practices and is "best for kids." The motion to approve the additional kindergarten position passed by voice vote.
The board’s action responds to immediate enrollment numbers; staff said the change preserves class-size targets and staffing quality. The board did not discuss any alternative staffing scenarios at length during the meeting.
