Highway staff report winter operations, staffing changes and two LRIP awards for 2026 projects

Highway Department staff briefed the Dodge County Highway Committee on Jan. 6 about recent operations and upcoming 2026 projects.
Staff reported heavy snow-and-ice duties in recent weeks and said they will order about 5,100 tons of state salt and 7,000 tons of county salt for the season. Crews have been repairing guardrail, cable barrier and signs and performing brushing and road patching between weather events.
On staffing, department leaders said a new Highway Maintenance Technician will start on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, temporarily restoring full staffing for that position; the department also received a retirement notice for the same role and has submitted requisitions to Human Resources to post the vacancy.
Project planning for 2026 is underway, with staff (Kempke) preparing projects to be advertised for bid in late winter to early spring. The department intends to post an ad for an engineering consultant to design two roundabouts at the intersections of CTH A & W and CTH S & G.
Staff reported LRIP applications have been submitted and indicated Dodge County will receive $473,000 for CTH F and $471,000 for CTH W. Minnig summarized the county highway budget as "in good shape" for the fourth quarter and committee members asked that future meeting packets be distributed at least one week in advance to allow time for review.
Supervisor Kavazanjian moved to approve the Dec. 2 and Dec. 16, 2025 minutes; Supervisor Kraus seconded and the motion carried by voice vote. The committee set its next meeting for 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 3, 2026, in Rooms 1H and 11 of the Dodge County Administration Building and adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
