Commission hears update on Puda Creek salmon experiment and a data coordination workshop

The commission received two related updates on Puda Creek ecology and data coordination. Speakers described a pilot in which about one million salmon fry were placed on rice fields in the Yolo bypass to increase their ocean survival; organizers expect a larger adult return up the bypass and potentially into Puda Creek in several years, and they noted this year’s Puda Creek salmon run totaled about 2,000 fish.
Commissioners heard that organizers tag batches or subsets of fish in some programs to track origin and survival but that most tagging is done by batch rather than individual fish. Separately, Solano County Water Agency and campus partners are hosting an annual Puda Creek data‑gathering workshop next Wednesday to inventory datasets, identify data needs, and discuss making disparate data interoperable. Participants hope to centralize and standardize the many citizen, academic and consultant datasets that currently exist in separate repositories so researchers and managers can query and link findings more effectively.
No formal action was taken on these briefings; commissioners expressed support for better data coordination and for continued monitoring of the experimental release and future runs.
