Lancaster district pilots "active floor" interactive learning platform for classrooms

Cindy Queen introduced the Integrated Technology team and coaches who presented an "active floor" — an interactive, motion-sensor learning surface that supports game-based lessons and kinesthetic engagement. Technology coaches Kayin Ming and Jen (Jenny) Patterson described features and curriculum uses.

Patterson said, "An active floor is an Interactive Learning tool that transforms our floor into a dynamic touch sensitive space" and described applications in math, science, history and language arts. Coaches emphasized the tool’s use for multilingual learners, social-emotional learning and special education and noted that lessons can be customized by teachers.

Staff said the district brought a unit to the meeting for board members and plans to pilot two devices at sites for family events and rotating classroom use. They described the platform as web-based and customizable, and asked interested principals or staff to contact the technology team for pilot opportunities.
