Project manager: Ithaca STEM space, auto and welding shops nearing completion; STEM move-in expected this summer

Travis Randall, project manager for Campus Construction Management Group, told the Ithaca City School District Facilities & Finance Committee on April 9 that multiple high-school construction projects are nearing completion and are scheduled for handover this summer.
"We plan to have [the STEM area] completed and turned over or owner occupancy move in this summer so that beginning next fall semester that area will be live for student use," Randall said, summarizing a slide set that showed new sidewalks and paving outside the STEM area, interior finishes for the open STEM room, a coiling separation door, and polished floors and equipment installs in the auto and welding shops.
Randall walked committee members through photos of site compaction for the new sidewalks, a coiling door intended to be open in daily use but closed for robotics or fire-alarm events, and the polished concrete floors and vehicle lift in the auto shop. He also described unit ventilator replacement work underway in classrooms, noting the new units provide both heating and cooling.
The construction plan calls for removal of temporary classroom complexes now housing STEM functions and restoration of those lawn areas; work on a back parking lot along Lake Street will include parking modifications, bus-loop changes and improved drainage. Randall said those exterior improvements and parking-lot lighting, new signage and an electronic sign will be completed during the summer construction window.
Committee members praised the plans and asked a handful of technical questions about safety sensors on the coiling door and the timeline for parking availability; Randall confirmed pressure plates and sensors will prevent the door from closing on people and said the parking work will be completed in time for staff and students to use it.
The update also included a look at HVAC and electrical rough-ins for specialty shop areas and a reminder that the polished-shop floors and specialized exhaust and lighting in the welding area are nearly finished. Randall closed by reiterating the summer milestones and the district's plan to return temporary sites to grass once the STEM move is complete.
The committee offered no formal vote on the construction update; members thanked Randall for the briefing and moved to the next agenda item.
