The Haines Borough Planning and Zoning Commission voted Feb. 26 to approve the Lettnikov float replacement design at the 95% stage after a presentation from project lead Henry.
Henry said there were no substantial design changes from the 65% drawings. The principal revision is to recover and repair a damaged piling rather than replace it; staff would include diving, welding and crane work in bids to capture that repair work. Additional mooring chains and sea anchors were added, the hinge junction was improved, and cathodic protection was included to reduce long-term corrosion in the silted, abrasive local waters. Safety features such as rescue ladders, fire-extinguisher cabinets and throw rings were added to the design.
Commissioners asked about anchor marking on nautical charts and anticipated anchor gear collecting debris over time; Henry said anchors will be marked on nautical charts and the borough could add dock signage if needed. The commission moved to approve the 95% design and approved it by voice vote.
Next steps: the project will move toward final design and procurement; the commission’s approval allows the design team to proceed to the final phase and eventual bidding.
