Design team returns with updated school renderings; board presses for workable bus loop

The Dexter Consolidated Schools board on March 9 heard a detailed construction update and asked the design team to fix site circulation problems before issuing final plans.
A construction committee presenter reviewed two vehicle-flow options and said a site walk with the architect showed the Butler-side entry would not accommodate bus traffic. "Once Decker came and walked as well as some information from us, this is not viable for bus traffic," the presenter said, and the board agreed they prefer a secure loop similar to the district's existing elementary layout if buses can be accommodated. The presenter said designers were challenged to produce a creative alternate that preserves a secure loop while keeping bus circulation off narrow neighborhood streets.
The presentation also showed initial and alternate exterior renderings, a material palette tied to local agriculture and water motifs, and floor plans that place an elementary wing on the south, a middle-school wing on the north and a shared media center, CTE culinary space, art and music rooms between them. The committee flagged the lack of restrooms adjacent to the gym as a major issue for community events and asked the architect to add them to the design.
Board members asked for clearer circulation diagrams and emphasized the need to balance community access, safety and school identity. The committee plans a community presentation at the elementary school during Science Night on April 7; Decker will present revised traffic flow and final renderings in person and via a soon-to-be-published project website, the presenter said.
The board did not vote on design approval at the meeting; members indicated they will review the updated plans when the architect returns and will invite city council members to future traffic discussions.
