Crown Point outlines culvert, downtown interceptor and roundabout timelines

Mayor Pete provided a multi-topic infrastructure update covering drainage, wastewater and transportation projects.

Edgewater culvert: The mayor said a failing culvert in the Edgewater subdivision (old railroad bed) previously flooded properties; the low bid for repair is $298,000. A Little Cow River Basin grant will cover 60% (about $179,000) and Crown Point will cover roughly $119,000. Work will also enable a future bike and walking trail segment, the mayor said.

Downtown interceptor: Mayor Pete described the downtown interceptor currently under construction on Lewis Street: a deep (around 30-foot) 4-foot pipe to consolidate undersized local sewer lines into a single conveyance to the wastewater plant. He said splitting work across two locations shortens schedule and saves roughly $1 million compared with a single-start approach.

Roundabout at 231: The mayor said the roundabout design is complete and the construction schedule targets spring 2027. The project is a state-led effort with a current 80/20 state/city cost split; the city applied for a grant that, if awarded, would change the split to 90/10. Mayor Pete said the city has budgeted funds to cover its share when due.

Utilities: The mayor noted ongoing NIPSCO pole replacements with crews expected through November and AT&T utility work in easements; he asked residents to file reports via the city website for inspection if they have problems.

Mayor Pete framed the projects as long-running, multi-mayoral efforts—some dating back to 2007—and urged residents to expect extended timelines and staged construction.
