Board approves spring student competitions, overnight trips and a technical scholarship

At its March 9 meeting the Maple School District board approved travel and competition requests from several student organizations and confirmed a technical excellence scholarship award.

Student presenters and advisors described qualified teams and logistics for upcoming events: the Visual Arts Classic (VAC) team requested an overnight stay in Madison April 9-10 for seven qualifying students (presentation by Claire Mir) with estimated costs reduced from $3,350 to $1,600 given current attendance; 15 FBLA students were approved to travel to the state conference in Green Bay April 12-14 (and potential national travel to San Antonio if students qualify, funded from the activity account); FCCLA received approval for 20 students to attend the state convention in the Wisconsin Dells April 6-8; and FFA was approved to send qualifying teams to state career development contests in Madison (dates vary depending on event).

Administrators noted that district funding and logistics (bus vs. vans, chaperones, registration fees) vary by trip; several presenters stressed that activity-account funds or student activity budgets will cover portions of national-level travel if students qualify. The board approved each request by motion and voice vote.

The board also approved the district's technical excellence scholarship selection. Staff recommended Henry Nielsen as the recipient; the award is a state-funded scholarship worth $2,250 per year for two years ($4,500 total) for students attending a Wisconsin technical college. Staff explained the selection uses a state-adopted point system tied to CTE participation.

Next steps: advisors will finalize travel arrangements and handle any necessary purchase orders; scholarship paperwork will be completed for Henry Nielsen.
